Barnwood Beds
With its weathered look and warm feel, small wonder why barnwood furniture has made its way into American bedrooms. Rustic bedroom furniture has been a great design choice for fashion-forward homeowners over the last several years. But it was only recently that barnwood beds, barnwood chests, barnwood dressers and barnwood nightstands have become a favorite of designers and owners alike.
Unique, strong and extremely durable, barnwood bedroom furniture mixes well with nearly any other furniture style. So you can introduce just one or two pieces into your space to create a rustic bedroom suite, or purchase an entire rustic bedroom set complete with lighting and accessories, all finished in weathered barnwood.
In contrast to contemporary furnishings, each piece of barnwood has a unique story to tell. The imperfections in the surface, the natural or simulated weathering and differences in the woods, combine to tell a story that is rich in American history and warmth.
The origins of barnwood furniture can be traced to the spread of pioneers west during the American expansion in the late 19th century. Short of milled lumber, early settles simply reused the woods from old barns to craft barnwood bunk beds, rustic bedroom chests and barnwood dressers.
This tradition continues today as old barns and structures are recycled and reused to make new products with an aged look. These woods – including pine, oak and cedar – are from old growth forests, so they are as strong and stout as they are beautiful.
For bedrooms, there are a wide number of styles and finishes available. In addition to the natural finish of barnwood, many pieces are sanded and painted in traditional country color schemes. Some even have early farm life and patriotic themes painted on them by skilled folk artists.
If you select a natural finish, you’ll have plenty of choices there too. Depending upon where the wood weathered, barnwood can take on a number of patinas, from honey colored pine to a rich, deep walnut.
With the addition of rustic bedroom furniture, your master suite or guest room can become that country themed retreat you’ve always dreamed of.
